Literacy and Numeracy

We place great emphasis on the fluency and enjoyment of reading and on the ability to express ideas clearly in writing.
We find that having vivid often practical experiences to write about helps us most.
Handwriting
Handwriting is taught as a separate lesson from Years 2-6. We find again that children who come through the lower school do not have problems.
We still employ some techniques which might be considered old-fashioned; hearing children read individually; a class reader for older children; reading aloud to children; quiet reading time; creative writing lessons and whole school projects based on an outing eg to Lindisfarne for the day.
We often employ a ‘project’ method where Maths, Science and English all emanate from a single theme e.g. investigating the local wind farm debate which caught the attention of our MP, Alan Beith or pursuing a Silver Award in the eco-schools programme.
